These Belgian waffles are fluffy with the perfect amount of sweetness and make the perfect breakfast. Berries, honey, and cinnamon make this warm compote a delicious topping.

What is the difference between Belgian waffles and regular waffles?

Belgian waffles are bigger than regular waffles and are achieved by the use of a Belgian waffle maker. Their deep pockets are perfect for holding toppings such as whipped cream, fruit, or ice cream. Belgian waffles are known for their crispy exterior which contrasts their soft, fluffy interior.

What is a compote?

Compote, which is French for stewed fruit, is made by cooking fruit with water, sugar, and spices. In this recipe, honey is used for the sugar and cinnamon for the spice.

Uses for Berry Compote

  • Waffles
  • Pancakes
  • French toast
  • Oatmeal
  • Yogurt

This compote has so many uses besides just on waffles. One of my other favorite uses for it is to mix it into a big bowl of steel cut oatmeal.

Equipment

  • Belgian waffle maker
  • Mixing bowl
  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Step 2: Preheat waffle iron per the manufacturer’s instructions. Grease with butter if necessary.

Step 3: Mix together dry ingredients in a medium bowl and set aside.

Step 4: In a large bowl, beat two eggs. Add milk, butter and vanilla and mix well.

Step 5: Stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients.

Step 6: Pour the waffle batter into the waffle iron and cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 7: Serve warm berry compote over buttered waffle. Enjoy immediately.

Storage

Let leftover waffles cool completely and then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Berry compote can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days as well. To freeze waffles, cool completely and then freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Reheat waffles in the toaster.
